This past summer I caught up with my friend and Broadway star Okieriete Onaodowan who plays Hercules Mulligan and James Madison in the Broadway Smash hit “Hamilton” in New York City. I got to sit fourth row in the “room where it happens” and later was able to stand on the stage which will forever be an incredibly legendary place.
I also got to meet and chat with Tony Award Winner, Mr.Thomas Jefferson , Daveed Diggs who was intrigued by the work we do at Thatz Showbiz. I later found out, it’s because he’s a teacher too!
I could write an abundance about how proud and honored I was to be there, about how the energy of the audience was so powerful it shook me in my core, about the tears that well in Javier’s eyes when he introduces himself as Alexander Hamilton for the first time, about how Okieriete leaps in the air and becomes super human for a split second. But no one needs me to tell them how special this piece of theatre is. How it has and continues to do everything theatre is meant to and more. The proof is in everything it has become.
From the humble star who has hung out in the White House, sung on the Grammy award winning Soundtrack, took the Tony awards by storm and is currently in the most successful, groundbreaking and talked about piece of theatre of all time, here is the inspiring advice my friend Oak shared with our students!
